Abstract

1384065 Isocyanate purification IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 30 Oct 1972 [30 Nov 1971] 55497/71 Heading C2C Organic isocyanates having a boiling point above 100‹ C. at atmospheric pressure are purified by reducing their content of hydrolysable chlorine-containing impurities by heating the isocyanate, optionally in the presence of a solvent, at a temperature above 200‹ C. under such conditions that boiling under reflux takes place and that the reflux condensate is returned to the boiling liquid in the liquid state. The temperature differential between the returning reflux condensate and the boiling liquid is preferably not more than 100‹ C. An inert gas may be passed through the boiling liquid during the process.
