Abstract

1362708 Purification of isocyanates IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 27 June 1972 [30 July 1971] 35975/71 Heading C2C Isocyanates are purified by passing the crude organic isocyanate at a temperature of from 160‹ to 200‹ C. through an elongated packed or plate column counter-current to a flow of inert gas or the vapour of an inert solvent, reheating the crude isocyanate to from 130‹ to 250‹ C. and then cooling the reheated isocyanate rapidly to below 100‹ C. at a rate sufficient to prevent dimer formation. Preferred isocyanates are diphenylmethane diisocyanate and tolylene diisocyanate.
