Abstract
Crude maleic anhydride (e.g. from the catalytic oxidation of materials such as benzene, butene and crotonaldehyde) is purified by treating it in the liquid state with sodium perborate and subsequently recovering the maleic anhydride by distillation. The sodium perborate may be used in the form NaBO34H2O, e.g. in amount 0,1-1,5% by weight of crude maleic anhydride. The latter is preferably molten, at at least 55 DEG C. The process may be carried out in two stages, the second under reflux conditions, preferably under reduced pressure.
