Abstract

A process for producing solid flexible homopolymers of ethylene comprises heating ethylene and a 1, 2-alkylene oxide containing from 2 to 4 carbon atoms at a temperature from 170 DEG to 210 DEG C. at a pressure of 1,500 to 10,000 atmospheres and in the presence of oxygen as catalyst. The alkylene oxide may be ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, isobutylene oxide or 1, 2-butylene oxide. Commercial ethylene containing small amounts of acetylene, methane, ethane, propane and carbon dioxide may be employed. The reaction may be effected batchwise or continuously, e.g. by passing through a tubular reactor and quenching the product in water. U.S.A. Specifications 2,153,553 and 2,188,465 are referred to.
