Abstract

Acetic acid is made continuously be reacting carbon monoxide and methanol in a reaction zone at a pressure of less than 50 atmospheres and at a temperature below 250 DEG C. which is sufficiently elevated to prevent condensation of the acetic acid produced, in presence of active carbon impregnated with nickel iodide, iodine lost from the active carbon being replaced during the process. Methyl iodide recovered from the effluent may be introduced with the reactants to replace iodine lost, and nickel carbonyl to replace nickel lost, or instead of continuously replenishing the nickel the carbon may be intermittently treated with nickel iodide solution. Water vapour may be present during the reaction. The product obtained by reacting carbon monoxide and hydrogen in presence of a methanol-forming catalyst may be used directly without separating the methanol. Any catalytically-active material in the effluent may be removed therefrom by passing the effluent through active carbon maintained at a lower temperature. Examples are given.
