Abstract
Olefine carbonates are manufactured by reacting carbon dioxide with an olefine oxide, the reaction being carried out at a temperature of the order of 180-200 DEG C. and a pressure of the order of 50-100 atmospheres and in the presence of a catalyst comprising a tertiary aliphatic amine or a tertiary heterocyclic amine containing the nitrogen of the amine group in heterocyclic combination with carbon. Suitable catalysts are pyridine, quinoline, acridine and trimethylamine. In an example ethylene oxide is treated with carbon dioxide in the presence of pyridine at 180-200 DEG C. and 100 atmos. to give ethylene carbonate. German Specification 740,366 is referred to.
