Abstract
Olefins are obtained by non-catalytic dehydrohalogenation of compounds of the formula XR1-CR3, in which each R is the same or different C1-C8 paraffinic hydrocarbon radical, the total number of carbon in all R groups being up to 18, R1 is a C2-C8 divalent paraffinic hydrocarbon radical and X is chlorine, bromine or iodine, by heating in the vapour phase to 450-600 DEG C. preferably in the presence of a non-catalytic contact material. The feed material preferably carries the halogen on the carbon beta to the neo-carbon, e.g. 1-chloro3,3 - dimethylbutane, 1 - chloro - 3,3 - dimethylpentane, and 2-chloro-4,4-dimethylpentane. The feed rate is 0.5-20 vol./vol./hr. over "Pyrex" (Registered Trade Mark) beads, coke, ceramic beads or nickel shavings. An inert gas such as nitrogen or carbon dioxide may be added in amounts of 0-20 mols. per mol. of hydrogen halide produced. The pressure is preferably not above 150 p.s.i.g.
