Abstract
The invention comprises a process for the preparation and recovery of chlorinated hydrocarbons and hydrogen chloride by the thermal chlorination of an aliphatic hydrocarbon having 1 to 4 carbon atoms in the molecule or a partial chlorination derivative thereof, by forming a reaction mixture preheated to substantially reaction temperature, reacting it at a temperature in the range of about 500 DEG to 700 DEG C., and recovering the desired products, the reaction mixture containing a major proportion of a diluent consisting of hydrogen chloride and/or a chlorinated hydrocarbon, and the reaction mixture being preheated by blending the reactants with a preheated diluent. The reaction mixture may contain from about 0.2 to about 0.7 atoms of carbon per mol. of chlorine. The hot reacted mixture may be blended with the raw feed to provide the diluent. Examples describe the chlorination of methane and propane to produce perchloroethylene with or without some carbon tetrachloride. Also mentioned are ethane, propylene, ethylene, butanes, and butenes.
