Abstract
Particulate material such as uranium carbide or carbon is coated with pyrolytic carbon by heating the particles in a fluidized bed using a mixed gas flow of hydrocarbon and hydrogen. The hydrocarbon may be methane, propane or benzene the gas mixture may be supplied to a graphite reaction vessel through concentric tubes, the inner carrying mixed gas and the outer annular passage additional hydrogen. Flow rates and reaction temperatures &c. are tabulated. The coated uranium carbide is suitable for use as reactor fuel.ALSO:Carbon is coated with pyrolytic carbon by heating the particles in a fluidized bed using a mixed gas flow of a hydrocarbon and hydrogen. The hydrocarbon may be methane, propane or benzene. The gas mixture may be supplied to a graphite reaction vessel through concentric tubes, the inner carrying mixed gases, and the outer annular passage additional hydrogen. Flow rates and reaction temperatures &c. are tabulated.
