Abstract

1,158,637. Pyrolytic deposition of carbon. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 15 Aug., 1967 [25 Aug., 1966], No. 38264/66. Heading C1A. [Also in Division G6] In a high temperature process for the pyrolytic deposition of carbon or a carbon-containing substance from the gas phase, said gas being introduced into the apparatus through an injection orifice, an agent is introduced into the apparatus to initiate an exothermic reaction additional to and compatible with the pyrolytic deposition reaction. The agent is preferably an oxidizing agent, e.g. CO 2 , air, oxygen, water vapour, and may be introduced into the apparatus either with the pyrolysis gas or elsewhere. Examples describe the deposition of carbon from methane or methane/ argon at 1800 to 2300‹ C. on to fluidized beds of refractory oxide (e.g. ThO 2 /UO 2 ) or carbide particles. Tumbling furnaces may also be used.
