Producers; carbonizing processes. - Gaseous hydrocarbons such as methane or mixtures thereof are converted into hydrogen and carbon monoxide by passage with water vapour, and with or without air or oxygen, through a water gas producer. The gases employed may be of natural origin, or waste gases from industrial processes such as the synthesis of ammonia, the hydrogenation of coal or the like, or cracking processes. According to an example, waste gas from ammonia synthesis containing methane, hydrogen and nitrogen is passed during the cold blowing stage together with steam through a water gas producer, a gas containing hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen together with some carbon dioxide and traces of methane being obtained. Specifications 17053/99, 188,494, 279,072, and 286,291, are referred to. The Provisional Specification describes also the production of hydrogen and carbon monoxide or carbon by the passage of hydrocarbons with or without water vapour, air or oxygen or mixtures of these into coal undergoing carbonization in a coke oven. Reference is also made to the passage of gaseous hydrocarbons with air or oxygen but without water vapour through gas producers other than water gas producers. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 101,152.
