Carbonizing processes; producers. - Gaseous hydrocarbons such as methane or mixtures thereof are introduced, with or without water vapour, into a charge in a coke oven. Temperatures of at least 800‹ to 1000‹ C. are employed. The gaseous hydrocarbons employed may be of natural origin or the waste gases containing hydrocarbons from industrial processes such as the synthesis of ammonia, hydrogenation of coal or the like, or cracking processes may be used. According to an example, waste gas from the synthesis of ammonia containing hydrogen, nitrogen and methane is passed together with steam through a glowing column of fuel undergoing carbonization in a coke chamber, a gas containing hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon monoxide together with some carbon dioxide and traces of methane being obtained. Specifications 128,660 and 249,901 are referred to. The Provisional Specification describes also the production of hydrogen and carbon monoxide by the passage of gaseous hydrocarbons together with water vapour, air or oxygen, or mixtures of these, through a water gas producer. Reference is also made to the passage of gaseous hydrocarbons together with air or oxygen, with or without water vapour, into coal undergoing carbonization. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 3197/10, 7049/10, and 101,152.
