Producer gas generated by incomplete combustion of solid, liquid or gaseous fuel with or without steam and/or carbon dioxide and after partial or complete removal of carbon dioxide and sulphur compounds is separated in a conventional low temperature rectification apparatus into synthesis gas containing up to 2 volumes of hydrogen per unit volume of carbon monoxide. The rectification step may be replaced by absorption using activated carbon.
