Abstract
325,869. Maurel, H. F. Nov. 1, 1928. Coking processes; retorts.-Coal is ground and briquetted with a heavy oil and the briquettes are first dried while being passed on a conveyer through a chamber heated to below 700‹ F. and then the hardened briquettes are coked in a vertical retort. The briquettes are fed from a shoot 12 into containers 13 which are attached to an endlsss chain 14 which conveys them through a liquid seal 15. and the compartments of a drying chamber 9 to be emptied by a tipper 21 into a retort 20 heated by hot gases which are passed through perforated pipes 40. The empty carriers pass again through the liquid seal, in which they are cooled, to the charging point. The drying chamber is heated by hot furnace gases which pass from flues 27 into hollow partitions 17, from which they pass to the pipes 40 in the retort, the top of which has an outlet 41 from which some of the hot gases are delivered to flues 26, 27 to regulate the temperature of the gases entering the oven. The briquettes are made of ground coal, which may be subjected to cleaning by the froth flotation process and the resulting paste mixed with oil or tar, and are formed into cylinders 60 with perforations 61 by extrusion through an auger machine.
