509,966. Coking processes ; retorts. HENNEBUTTE, G. A. L., HENNEBUTTE, H. G., HENNEBUTTE, G. B., and HENNEBUTTE, P. P. Oct. 5, 1938, No. 28900. [Class 55 (i)] Cellulosic material such as wood is charged in small pieces into a pre-heating or drying hopper B through which it passes continuously by gravity being agitated by spiral members T and being heated by contact with hot combustion gases from burners K which, after heating the retort L, enter through openings O. The steam and other products are evacuated through a perforated pipe S and outlet S<1> and the charge is carbonised by external heating in the retort L, the distillates passing downwardly through a perforated duct to an outlet R. The central perforated pipe is closed at N to prevent the passage upwardly of the distillates from the retort. A jacket enclosing the discharge worm H serves as a preheater for the air or gas supplied to the burners K.
