Abstract
348,106. Drying fuel. AMERICAN ENGINEERING CO., Aramingo Avenue, Philadelphia, U.S.A. Jan. 3, 1930, No. 297. Convention date, Nov. 18, 1929. [Class 34 (ii).] Fuel from a hopper 11, Fig. 1, is fed by a conveyer 14 to a drying and preheating chamber 15, where it gravitates down over vibrating elements 16 to retort chamber 21. The chamber 15 is heated by low temperature gases withdrawn by a pipe 18 from the second pass of the gases over the boiler tubes. In a modification, the hot gases pass from the casing surrounding the retorts to the drying and preheating chamber and are returned to the furnace flue beyond the boiler. The drying and preheating chamber may comprise a number of horizontal screw conveyers 32, Fig. 5, arranged at an inclination, the fuel being fed back and forth while exposed to the hot gases and finally discharged by the lower conveyer into the retorts. Other forms of drying and preheating chambers comprise endless band conveyers and superposed rows of pivoted plates, the plates on adjacent rows being tipped alternatively.
