Producers; coking processes.-Water gas is generated in a rotary producer e from fuel supplied from a hopper a and conveyor b to a reaction chamber f surrounded by heating channels h<2>. During the blow period combustible gases from a pipe n are burned in a chamber h' and circulated through channels h<2>, j to the outlet pipes k<1> and m<1>. During the run, steam from a pipe o is superheated above 1000‹ C. in the channels h<2> containing chequer brickwork and passes in counter-current to the charge, the water gas and distillates leaving by an outlet pipe d. The water gas may, after preheating, if necessary, be passed through a retort and used to distil raw carbonaceous materials therein, the resulting gases being heated for the recovery of by-products, and a part or the whole of the gas may, after preheating, if necessary, be recirculated through the retort. The mixed gases may be heated to crack the oil vapours derived from the raw material. The stripped gases may be re-circulated together with steam through the chequer brickwork chamber.
