16,857. Hall, W. A. July 15. Coking and carbonizing processes.-Oils suitable for cracking to yield motor spirit are obtained by heating a mixture of bituminous coal or lignite with coke or the like in granular form gradually to a temperature of about 500‹ C. in an externally heated retort, and condensing the volatile matter evolved. The coal or lignite is preferably not coarser than pea size, and the coke may be replaced by breeze, charcoal, peat, or like carbonaceous material. The proportion of coke &c. should be from 10 to 20 per cent or higher.
