111,285. Smith, C. H. Nov. 15, 1916, [Convention date]. Drawings to Specification. Materials for making gas, coke, and other products.-Briquettes which are adapted to burn in a smokeless manner are formed by heating to a high temperature a moulded briquette which has been formed from crushed partially carbonized coal or mixtures of coal or coke and partially carbonized coal with water, or with an hydrocarbon binder such as tar, pitch, oil, or with raw coal, the characteristic feature of the composition being that it contains partially carbonized coal and from 11 to 17 per cent. of volatile matter exclusive of water which is partially driven off during the final heating. The invention is described in connexion with an apparatus which is similar to that described in Specification 106,084, [Class 55 (i), Coking &c.], and in which coal having a higher percentage of carbon than seventeen is submitted to a partial carbonizing operation. As open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) the Specification includes the formation of briquettes from any mixture of raw coals or coke or of these with any binder provided that the volatile content of the mixture was between 11 and 17 per cent. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted, but is described in Specification 120,585.
