Abstract

In the manufacture of files, teeth are cut on a blank of low or medium carbon steel containing less than 0.5 per cent. of carbon, the file so produced being carburized so that the case extends at least to the root of the teeth and the carburized part surface hardened substantially only to the depth of the case or the root of the teeth by high frequency induction heating to a temperature of 760-800 DEG C. The heating may be effected by an inductor coil of the single turn type shaped to give uniform heating of the teeth or by means of a concentrator or focus conductor. After carburizing the file is quenched in air, oil or water and after the heating in water or brine. The files may be passed through the inductor in a horizontal direction by rollers or other conveying mechanism or in a direction inclined to the vertical by a roller table which is itself inclined.
