Abstract

620,516. Heat-treating. STIVIN, J. Oct. 4, 1946. No. 29680. Convention date, Jan. 5, 1944. [Class 72] In a method of eliminating permanent deformation in the surface hardening of steel and alloy steel, the temporary deformation of the article during surface heating is restricted so that the suppressed part of the deformation causes a compression of the heated surface resulting in a permanent deformation which compensates the deformation due to the increase in the specific volume of the surface layer on quenching. As shown, a flat strip or ruler 1 to be hardened on its lower surface rests on a heating device 3 fed with high frequency current. Adjustable stops 4 disposed in arms 5 of a stirrup-like device 6 suppress the bending upwards of the ends to such an extent that, on quenching, the ruler remains flat. In a modification Figs. 6, 7, applied to the suface hardening of rails, rollers 41, 42. and 43 suppress part of the deformation due to heating the surface 38 by the heater 39. The invention is also described applied to piston rings, Fig. 3 (not shown) bevel gears, Fig. 5 (not shown) and connecting rod heads, Fig. 4 (not shown).
