[Class 72] [See also Group XI] The surfaces of metal articles are hardened by burners having more than one flame by reciprocating the burner laterally or transversely relatively to the direction of movement of the article past the flames. In Fig. 1, an elongated burner B having a number of flames F is reciprocated as shown over an article W e.g. a shaft, which is rotated. In Fig. 2, a ring-shaped burner B' is reciprocated as shown round the article W<1> which is rotated. The burner may be reciprocated by a crank mechanism not shown.
