Abstract
In the manufacture of case-hardened piston rings in which the tensioning of the slotted ring and the case-hardening are both effected by applying heat, the case-hardening is effected simultaneously with the tensioning. The slotted untensioned ring is placed upon a tensioning member and the ring is heated under such conditions as to produce both the tensioning and the case-hardening. The case-hardening may be produced by heating cast iron rings in an atmosphere of cyanogen, cyanogen compounds such as butane or rings of an alloy cast iron containing aluminium or chromium in an atmosphere containing nitrogen. Parts of the ring which is not desired to case-harden are coated with a mixture of aluminium and water glass or chromium oxide and waterglass.
