Abstract

Iron or steel articles are case-hardened by heating them, preferably to 1400 DEG C., in contact with a boron carbon compound preferably B4C, and quenching. The articles may be embedded in the comminuted carbide in a carburizing pot before the latter is heated and the carbide may be covered with carbonaceous material. The boron carbide may be produced as described in Specification 415,392, [Group III].
