Abstract
Articles of iron, steel, or alloys with other metals such as nickel, chromium, vanadium, molybdenum and tungsten are treated in baths containing barium cyanide in admixture with not less than 40 per cent, and preferably more than 50 per cent, of barium chloride at a temperature of 850-950 DEG C. The bath may be prepared by adding up to 10 per cent, preferably 1-3 per cent, of alkali cyanide to barium chloride or to mixtures containing not less than 40 per cent of barium chloride. Other substances which lower the melting point of the bath such as sodium or potassium chloride and a small proportion of carbon 0,1-1,0 per cent may be added to the bath. To prevent access of air a layer of graphite or charcoal may be provided on the surface of the bath.
