Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTOPHER G. TBINKLE, OF BOMNEY, INDIANA.
COMPOUND FOB, TEMPERING STEEL.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER C. TRIN- KLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Romney, in the county of Tippecanoe and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compounds for Tempering Steel, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more particularly to the compounds for tempering steel disclosed by me in one certain Letters Patent of record, namely: No. 1,243,899, dated October 23, 1917, and has for its object the production of a compound of the character disclosed which when applied to articles of steel substantially as described in said Letters Patcut will more distinctly temper and toughen the same than is distinctly done by the use of my composition set forth therein and to this end my present invention consists of an improved compound composed of the following constituents, combined in a pulverized state in the following proportions, namely:
Bicarbonate of soda 2 parts. \Villow charcoal 1 part. Sulfur l i s a 2parts. Copperas 1 part. Table salt 2 parts.
These constituents are first to be pulverized, then combined in the proportions stated and then thoroughly mingled in their pulverized state by agitation.
Specification of Letters Patent.
In the use of my improved compound to temper any article of steel I employ the process disclosed by me heretofore, namely: That part of the article to be tempered is put into the fire and heated to a cherryred, then removed and covered With the compound by sprinkling or otherwise, then returned to the fire and slowly reheated to a cherry-red, then removed and bathed in Warm water, then the temper is drawn until a file takes hold regardless of color and then deposited in warm water until cool.
By the use of my improved compound in the manner described articles of steel will be more distinctly tempered and toughened than the same are distinctly tempered and toughened by the use of my compound disclosed heretofore.
In the above described compound and process of using the same I produce a new and useful invention for tempering and toughening steel, tool-steel and steel-tools of every description and what I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
The herein described compound, comprisbicarbonate of soda, Willow charcoal, sulfur, copperas and table salt, in or about the proportions specified and for the purpose set forth.
CHRISTOPHER C. TRINKLE.
