Abstract

In a process for case hardening articles of iron, steel or alloy steels, the articles are immersed in a fused alkali salt bath containing up to 20 per cent by weight of a boron compound at least 5 per cent by weight of an alkali metal cyanide and no alkaline earth compounds or complex cyanides, the temperature of the bath being 550-860 DEG C. and preferably 790-845 DEG C. In an example, a bath contains 15 per cent of sodium cyanide, 65 of sodium chloride, 20 of potassium chloride and 1 of boron oxide. An alloy steel containing 0,8-1,1 per cent of chromium, 0,3-0,4 of carbon and 0,3-0,4 of manganese is referred to.
