Abstract

1455841 Chromium electro-plating ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd 6 Feb 1976 [26 Nov 1976] 1477/76 Divided out of 1455580 Heading C7B A make-up and replenishment composition for Cr III electro-plating baths comprises (a) borate asboric acid or alkali metal or ammonium borate, (b) an alkali metal chloride, fluoride and/or sulphate, (c) alkali metal or ammonium bromide and (d) NH 4 as borate, chloride, bromide, fluoride or sulphate. Not more than two of Cr III ion, formate and water may also be included, although all three may be present when the Cr III is complexed e.g. by including excess formate and effecting an initial plating-out to form the complex, or by heating Cr III, formate and halide in solution to give a complex for adding to the bath. The bath may be at pH 1-4. From 0À01-5 wt. per cent of wetting agent e.g. Na sulphosuccinate with octanol may be added. The Cr III source may be a usual salt or may be from a sulphate tanning liquor. In an example Zn is plated with Cu, duplex Ni, then Cr.
