Abstract

1372297 Chromating non-ferrous surfaces J M ELTZROTH & ASSOCIATES Inc 11 April 1972 [26 April 1971] 16658/72 Heading C7U [Also in Division B2] A chromating composition for e.g. aluminized or galvanized iron or steel, Al, Al-Zn alloys, Mg and Mg-Al alloys comprises (g./l.) hexavalent Cr (expressed as Cr) 0.05 to 50, trivalent Cr (expressed as Cr) 0.03 to 3.0, fluoride or bifluoride (expressed as F) 0.03 to 3.0, borate (expressed as B 2 O 3 ) 0.01 to 3.0, fluoborate (expressed as BF 4 ) 0.03 to 10.0, sulphate (expressed as SO 4 ) 0.01 to 3.0, Mg 0.01 to 3.0, Al 0.01 to 3.0, Fe 0.01 to 0.05, Ni 0.01 to 0.05, and optionally acetate 0.01 to 0.1, and wetting agent 0.01 to 0.1. The trivalent chromium may be formed in situ by a reducing agent e.g. sodium nitrite or sodium sulphite. The coating may be subsequently painted with e.g. acrylic p.v.c. epoxy, epoxy-acrylic, polyester or polyurethane resins.
