Abstract

A fused salt bath, for the carburization of iron or steel at 950-1100 DEG C., consists of by weight alkaline earth metal halide, e.g. BaCl2, 65-72%, alkaline earth metal carbonate, e.g. BaCO3, 5-15%, alkali metal cyanide, e.g. NaCN, 2-10%, and alkali metal carbonate, e.g. Na2CO3, as balance. Oxidation of cyanide to carbonate is controlled by providing the bath with a sealed hood and passing a non-oxidizing gas, such as coal gas, CO, CH4 or N2, through the hood, as disclosed in the divisional Specification 942,769. The bath is also preferably covered with a layer of graphite. A suitable regenerative composition is made up of the above constituents but without alkali metal carbonate and with cyanide 15-25%. Prior art baths are disclosed consisting of 40-55% alkaline earth metal halide such as BaCl2, 10-20% alkali metal cyanide, remainder alkali metal halide, and 20-50% alkali metal cyanide, remainder alkali metal carbonate and halide.
