Abstract

The sensitivity to U.V. radiation of a manganese-activated magnesium ortho-stannate phosphor is improved by firing, e.g. at <\>t 2000 DEG F. in a reducing atmosphere. This reduces the manganese to Mn2+ and some at least of the tin to Sn2+ while retaining the f.c.c. Mg2SnO4 crystal structure. The reducing gas may be N2+H2, or steam and hydrogen, or NH3 or CO. The manganese may be present in 0.001-0.10, preferably 0.015-0.030 mole fraction.
