Abstract

925,762. Plutonium compounds; neutron sources. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. Sept. 27, 1961 [Oct. 17, 1960], No. 34576/61. Drawings to Specification. Class 39 (4). A neutron source is made by reacting beryllium and plutonium, the beryllium being in the form of a crucible which contains the plutonium, has an isolating layer of beryllium oxide and/or beryllium nitride on its outer surface, and is disposed in a metal container. The container is at least partially evacuated and sealed, after the crucible is enclosed, and before the reaction between the plutonium and beryllium is initiated. The layer on the crucible may be produced either by heating the crucible in air and then in nitrogen, this latter heating being conducted at a pressure of 15 p.s.i. for about 15 minutes, or the layer may be formed just by heating in air for about 15 mins., or simply heating in nitrogen. After this heating, the inner surface of the crucible is cleaned to present a fresh surface of beryllium to react with the plutonium. Pieces of plutonium are placed in the crucible and the crucible placed in a metal, usually tantalum, but may be molybdenum or tungsten, container which is evacuated and sealed. It is then heated to 1150‹ C. when the plutonium reacts with the beryllium to give PuBe 13 and the resulting body, usually jacketed in stainless steel, is used as a neutron source.
