Abstract

926,632. Nuclear fuel. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. Dec. 23, 1959 [Dec. 31, 1958], No. 43694/59. Class 39 (4). A nuclear fuel material comprises an intimate mixture of one or more of the carbides of uranium, thorium, and plutonium and an inert material comprising one or more of the carbides of vanadium, chromium, molybdenum, and titanium and the nitrides of zirconium, chromium, molybdenum, niobium and titanium. The inert material reduces the chemical reactivity of the uranium, thorium, or plutonium carbide in moist air. A mixture of the carbides and/or nitrides in fine particle form may be fused at a sintering temperature of about 800‹ C., and preferably above 1600‹ C., in a reducing atmosphere. Alternatively, uranium, thorium, or plutonium in metal, oxide, or carbide form may be heated in hydrogen in the presence of carbon to form the carbides. The inert nitrides may be formed by heating similar mixtures in nitrogen or ammonia.
