Abstract

1,154,484. Luminescent materials. VAKUTRONIK WISSENSCHAFTLICHER INDUSTRIEBETRIEB DRESDEN VEB. 22 June, 1966, No. 27949/66. Heading C4S. In the production of a polycrystalline LiF storage phosphor of grain diameter 0À04 to 0À2 mm. for example with thermoluminescent glow maximum at 200‹ C., an activator combination is added to an aqueous lithium salt solution and the activator combination and LiF are precipitated together, the activator combinations of Mg-Ti, Mg-Eu, Mg-Ca, Mg- Ti-Ca or Mg-Eu-Ca being in amount Mg: 0À005 to 0À05 mol. per cent; Ca: 0À003 to 0À4 mol. per cent; Ti: 0À001 to 0À05 mol. percent; and Eu: 0À001 to 0À5 mol. per cent. The LiF is then washed to remove the acid, dried and annealed twice in platinum or quartz vessels in the range 560 to 650‹‹ C., for 10 to 120 mins. Impurities in the starting substances, such as Pb, Ag, Fe, Mn must not exceed 0.001%. The energy dependence may be changed by adding a subliminal, temperature-stable substance e.g. boronoxide or nitride and thermal neutron sensitivity may be increased by Li-6-Cl additions for instance. Before the first measurement the LiF may be exposed to 50 to 250 kR gamma radiation and heated to 280‹ to 320‹ C. or heated after each measurement to 380‹ to 450‹ C. Applications in dosimeters for operation in the range 0. to 10,000 rads are instanced for exposure to ionizing rays such as X-rays. A phosphor prepared includes also Si and Al impurities.
