Abstract

Ferrous alloy articles, such as mild steel gears or crankshafts, are case-hardened by immersing the article, for a time and at a temperature sufficient to form a nitride case on the article e.g. for 1-5 hours at 850-1, 100 DEG F., in a fused salt bath containing at least one cyanate produced in sity by adding urea, e.g. in the form of a prepared salt containing urea or in molten form, to one or more of the salts, preferably as a molten bath, alkali or alkaline earth metal cyanides and/or carbonates. During the addition of urea, the molten salt bath may be agitated by bubbling dry air through it. The fused salt bath may also contain one or more alkali or alkaline earth metal chlorides. The concentration of cyanate salt is preferably between 10 and 60% by weight of the bath. After water or oil quenching or air cooling, the resulting case may consist of iron nitride with some iron carbide.
