Abstract

339,220. Deutsche Gold-und Silber- Scheideanstalt vorm. Roessler. April 10, 1929, [Convention date]. Alkali and alkaline-earth metal cyanates; ammonia.-Alkali and alkaline-earth metal cyanates are obtained by heating urea in the absence of solvents, say to 120-150‹ C., with basic alkali metal compounds such as soda or potash or alkali hydrides (but excluding alkali hydroxides) or with alkaline-earth metal compounds, for instance with calcium oxide or hydroxide, calcium carbide, hydride, amide, or carbonate. Ammonia evolved is recovered, and when calcium carbide is used, acetylene also is obtained. In carrying out the process less than the equivalent quantity of urea may be used at first, and then a further quantity be added to provide a slight excess. Alkalineearth cyanates obtained may be treated in aqueous solution or suspension with alkali compounds such as common salt to produce alkali cyanates.
