Abstract

1,223,952. Carburizing steel. H€RTOLWERK VEB. Aug.27, 1968, No.40950/68. Heading C7U. Steel is carburized in a cyanide - free bath to which is added elemental carbon, silicon carbide, and elemental silicon or a silicon alloy. The bath may be formed from chlorides and carbonates of the alkali and alkaline earth metals, and silicon carbide, alkali carbonate and silicon or a silicon alloy may be added together to the bath in powder or pressed form-carbon, preferably as flake graphite, may be added to the bath together with, or separately from the other additives. The bath is operated at 750‹ to 1200‹C., preferably 900‹ to 1000‹ C.
