Abstract

The articles are immersed in a salt bath at 760-1040 degrees C. The bath compsn. is (a) 0.001% - 99.9% of alkali metal and/or alkaline earth metal chlorides; (b) 0.001%-99.9% carbonates, oxides, fluorides, pyrophosphates and hydroxides of alkali and alkaline earth metals; (c) a reactive type material of very pure C which is continuously present at the bath surface and is stirred in mechanically to provide a source of C for the bath. The baths are free from cyanide and consequent harmful effects.
