Abstract

In the phosphatizing of ferrous metal surfaces by subjecting them to a bath containing the phosphate of a metal above iron in the electrochemical series, the ferrous phosphate content of the bath is reduced by the periodic addition of an oxidizing agent capable of oxidizing ferrous iron to ferric iron under the conditions of the reaction. These additions are apart from and in addition to the usual replenishing. The amount of oxidizing agent added is preferably insufficient to oxidize all of the ferrous phosphate. When the bath contains manganese phosphate, e.g. a mixture of manganese and ferrous dihydrogen phosphates, the oxidizing agent is preferably potassium permanganate; when zinc dihydrogen phosphate is used, the oxidizing agent is preferably hydrogen peroxide. The bath may contain a weak oxidizing agent, e.g. sodium nitrate, to reduce or inhibit the formation of a hydrogen blanket on the work, as described in Specification 386,739*.
