Abstract

The action of an acid phosphate solution on metals, e.g. iron, steel, zinc, or magnesium, is accelerated by the addition of an oxidizing agent capable of diminishing or removing the hydrogen blanket generated at the surface of the metal. When coating iron or steel or when using a solution containing ferrous phosphate, only oxidizing agents which do not react to any great extent with the ferrous iron in the bath, such as nitrates, nitrites, sulphites, nitric acid, sodium tungstate, uranyl acetate, chlorates, bromates, iodates, or organic compounds such as methylene blue, can be employed: in other cases common oxidizing agents such as air, hydrogen peroxide, manganates, permanganates, manganese dioxide, chromates, dichromates, and quinone are also satisfactory. In forming a powder for replenishing a bath the oxidizing agent, e.g. sodium nitrate, is preferably dusted with an inert material, e.g. calcium carbonate or zinc carbonate, to inhibit reaction between the oxidizing agent and the phosphate powder before they are dissolved. Copper may be added to the solution as an additional accelerator, a bath formed by dissolving zinc dihydrogen phosphate and copper nitrate, and a replenishing powder consisting of zinc dihydrogen phosphate, copper nitrate, and calcium carbonate, being described. Copper may be added in small quantities to a phosphate solution containing an oxidizing agent such as sodium nitrate. The solutions may be used at any temperature from room temperature to boiling-point.
