Abstract

Surfaces of iron, zinc, copper, aluminium or their alloys are cleaned-and in the case of iron, zinc or their alloys are also coated -by treatment with an aqueous solution containing both primary and secondary alkali (including ammonium) phosphates having a pH value not less than 5 nor more than 6, the actual pH value being greater than that corresponding to the monobasic phosphate present alone and less than that corresponding to the dibasic phosphate present alone. The solution may also contain 0.1-2.0 per cent of ferric or aluminium ortho-phosphate; an oxidizing agent such as a nitrate, nitrite, organic nitro-compounds, or hydrogen peroxide; ions (0.0002-0.01 per cent) of copper, silver, nickel or ferrous iron; a wetting agent; and an anti-foaming agent. The invention comprises also compositions of the compounds set out above which are adapted on solution in water to produce the treating solutions referred to, the molar ratio of the primary to the secondary alkali phosphates being preferably between 32:1 and 5.6:1, and the composition being at least 75 per cent alkali phosphates. Specifications 510,684, 517,049 and 596,876 are referred to.
