802,894. Preventing corrosion. BERNARD, M. L. J. June 29, 1956 [Feb. 1, 1956], No 20270/56. Class 123(1) Corrosion of containers, pipes, &c., made of ferrous metal, light alloys or zinc by concentrated acids such as nitric, sulphuric of hydrochloric acids is prevented by admixing a small proportion of a substance containing phosphate ions with the acid, e.g. orthophosphoric acid, the phosphates of iron, manganese, zinc or sodium or an organic phosphate. From 0.25 to 2 per cent of a tensio-active agent may be mixed with the phosphate substance, particularly when the metal has not been subjected to a preliminary phosphating treatment. In an example, concentrated nitric acid is inhibited by the addition of 0.5 per cent by weight of orthophosphoric acid and 1 per cent by weight of nitrated chaulmoogric acid.
