Abstract

Iron, steel and iron alloys, containing for example nickel or chromium, are rendered passive by heating in oxygen at a low partial pressure to form a thin, compact, adherent oxide layer. A low partial pressure may be obtained by the use of oxygen alone at a low pressure, by dilution of air or oxygen with nitrogen, or by using gaseous oxygen compounds dissociating at the temperature used to give a suitable partial pressure; such compounds may be used alone, in admixture with each other or diluted with other gases.
