Abstract

A controlled atmosphere for the bright annealing of steel is produced by passing a gaseous nitrogen fraction containing 0.04-2 per cent O2, separated from air by low temperature liquefaction and rectification, over-heated charcoal at a temperature not substantially below 650 DEG C., and removing any CO2 and H2O formed, e.g. by treating with caustic potash and phosphorus pentoxide. A temperature of 800 DEG C. and above is preferably used when the resulting gas is N2 and CO only and may be used direct for heat treating steel.
