Abstract
<PICT:0969487/C6-C7/1> Steels having scale formed during a heat-shaping operation such as rolling and drawing are heat-treated without decarburization by annealing the steel under a protective gas atmosphere containing carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in a ratio preventing decarburization, the necessary carbon monoxide content being maintained by continuously circulating the gas, e.g. by a blower 5, from the annealing vessel or vessels 3 through a contact furnace 4 and back to the annealing vessel(s), the contact furnace being operated at such a temperature, e.g. 1000 DEG C., that sufficient carbon dioxide contained in the gas is reduced to carbon monoxide to give the desired CO : CO2 ratio. The protective gas, which may comprise partially burnt city gas composed of CO, CO2, H2 and N2, may be prevented from falling below atmospheric pressure by make-up gas supplied from a constant pressure gasometer 2 which is fed from an exothermic gas generator 1.
