Abstract

411,380. Enamelling iron. KREIDL, A., 6, Ettingshausengasse, Vienna. Nov. 29, 1933, No. 33464. Convention date, Dec. 7, 1932. [Class 56.] A process for enamelling articles of iron or steel without using a base enamel consists in subjecting the articles, before enamelling, to treatment by which there is formed, with the least possible simultaneous oxidisation of the iron surface, a coating of spinel-like nature. For this purpose, an article is brought to red heat in the presence of a coating containing metallic oxides and sesquioxides which are capable of combining to form spinels, and with the addition of fluxes, in an atmosphere of low oxygen content compared with air. The articles need not be etched and adherent rust may be left untouched. A suitable coating can be provided by a mixture of 100 parts of water, 5 parts of Fe2O3' 4 parts of NiO, 20 parts of CaF2, 45 parts of boric acid, and 10 parts of clay. An article is moistened with the mixture and after drying, is submitted to a temperature of 785-795‹ C. for seven minutes in an atmosphere in which, by admixture of producer or similar waste gases, the oxygen content has been lowered to between a fourth and a fifth of the usual value.
