538,963. Heating by electromagnetic induction. BUDD INDUCTION HEATING, Inc. March 1, 1940, No. 3921. Convention date, March 23, 1939. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group II] To harden piston rings 10 they are stacked one above the other between metal end members 11, 12 and enclosed by a metal cylinder 13, and an induction head 15 such as is described in Specifications 503,130 and 505,073 inserted in the rings is supplied with alternating current of such intensity and frequency that the rings are rapidly heated from their inner surfaces to a distance less than their radial thickness. They are immediately quenched by liquid from a nozzle 20 and then removed, split and suitably finished as by grinding Specification 527,842, [Group II], also is referred to.
