[Class 72] [Also in Group XI] Progressive heat-treatment of the surface of an article is effected by apparatus comprising independent spaced inductors and quenching means. In Fig. 1, a quenching device 21 is arranged between the tempering inductor 24 and the inductors 18, 19. In Fig. 3, the quenching ring 36 is arranged below the inductors 25, 34, the inductor 25 being adapted for quenching also.
