Abstract

485,651. Hardening metal articles. DENNEEN, F. S., DUNN, W. C., and MITCHELL, C. N. Sept. 19, 1936, No. 25513. [Class 72] [Also in Group XI] In surface hardening by means of inductive heating followed by quenching, a quenching nozzle 18, Fig. 1, is provided, independent of the inductor 11 and located at an end or side thereof to project a stream of fluid through the space between the inductor and the article 15 treated. The article is rotated or oscillated during treatment. Quenching may be controlled by a thermo-couple. In Fig. 2, an inductor 33 is supported at 27 on a part of the shaft 24 and a quenching nozzle 35 is provided. The inductor has perforations 31 and may serve as an additional quenching device. In further modifications a number of inductors capable of relative movement are arranged along a journal. Quenching nozzles are provided at the centre or ends of the journal. Tempering is effected by reheating or by using heated oil as a quenching medium. Specifications 470,539 and 485,730 are referred to.
