Abstract

533,886. Annealing metals. DENNEEN, F. S., and DUNN, W. C. Dec. 9, 1939, No. 31872. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group II] A crankshaft or other article to be hardened is heated by electric induction in a supporting frame 10 having guide ways 15 for sliding heating and quenching units into position along the article. The units are mounted on subframes 18, and are moved longitudinally of the article by screwed rods 19, 20 engaging the sub-frames and transversely by racks and pinions 22. Each inductor is made in two parts 32, 39 which may be separated to receive the journal or other part to be treated. The lower part is fixed to the sub-frame and the upper part is carried by a pivoted arm 38. The parts are clamped together by a bar 60 operated by air-piston mechanism 66. Quench supplied to the lower part through a pipe 44 and to the upper part through the hollow pivoted arm is discharged against the heated surface through orifices 42. The shaft is supported by outwardly projecting buckets 75 at the top and bottom of the frame and rests on a vertically adjustable plate in the lower brackets.
